Note:
The second edition of the above book was slightly enlarged and in the third edition the section dealing with Arnhem Land and adjacent islands was re-written to include results of observations made during the Australian and American Arnhem Land Expedition, of which Mr McCarthy was a member.
The fourth and fifth editions were vitually the same as the third, but with minor alterations and the inclusion of two additional illustrations. In the sixth edition, three full-page illustrations were added and several additions were made to the bibliography.
In the seventh edition, a short account of Cape York sculpture was incorporated, and one illustration was replaced by two others.
In the eighth edition, two illustrations of central Australian ritual regalia have been omitted, a plate of Cape York sculptures has been added, and the text has been revised in the light of recent research.
