His interest encompassed all 'primitive' cultures although his particular love was for the works of Polynesia, this section being the finest private collection in existence. The cultures of Melanesia, North America and Africa are also well represented. The collection illustrates Hooper's vast range of interest of figure sculpture, implements, ornaments and domestic utensils which display a vitality of craftsmanship that has only recently come to be widely appreciated. The book is divided by area, each section containing a concise geographical, historical and cultural appraisal of the people - together with maps, illustrations and a descriptive catalogue with full provenances. Information is drawn from contemporary and historical sources. 1927 artefacts are catalogued and approximately 1800 items are illustrated. A comprehensive bibliography is supplied for each area covered) (Keywords: Ethnology, Melanesia, Polynesia, Hawaii, Fiji, Solomon Islands, New Zealand, Maori, Marquesas Islands, Australia, Aboriginal, North America, Northwest Coast).
