Williams, F.E. DRAMA OF OROKOLO. The Social and Ceremonial Life of the Elema. BNo. n/a. Reprint Edition, 1969 (1940) Pp: xxvi, 464; 215mm x 140mm; 1.09kg. 63 b/w, 21 fig, 3 tab, 2 maps. Foreword, preface, acknowledgments, appendix, glossary, index. A very good copy in dust wrapper. Cvr: vg; dw: vg. Oxford University Press, London, 1969. (The theme of this book is a cycle of ceremonies, called Hevehe, which belong to the Papuan people of the Papuan Gulf. It is carried through with much primitive magnificence and on such a scale that its many stages, like the acts of an immense drama, may stretch over a period of more than fifteen years. The introduction and Part I are devoted to a general description of its natural and social settings. In Part II the ceremonies are narrated, with constant references to their social, magico-religious and aesthetic aspects. Attention to minute detail and the tracing of connections between the cycle and other phases of the people's life serves to display a primitive culture in full working. Part III is an analysis of the Hevehe as an institution. This leads to certain conclusions regarding the Elema culture. The author evaluates the native institutions in terms of the human needs which they satisfy and the potentialities to which they give scope) (Keywords: Anthropology, ethnology, Pacific, Melanesia, New Guinea, Papua, Hevehe, Elema).
