The basis of the book was a parcel of notes written by Hugh Brooke Low during his appointment under the Government of Sarawak. During the eighteen years of his service (1869-87) Low was principally on the Rejang river which gave him great opportunities of studying the Dyak and Kayan races. Some of Low's papers about British North Borneo (now Sabah) have been included.
